Wedding Vows

Wherever or however you get married, the one consistent aspect is the part of the ceremony in which the bride and groom declare their love and fidelity for one another. But even this doesn’t have to follow a script. You may be having a traditional church wedding, a registry office wedding or even a wedding abroad, and your vows can be adapted to suit accordingly.

The classic vows, in a religious wedding, tend to follow a prescribed text, though you can often still add in some personal touches and phrases – speak to the person conducting your ceremony to find out if this is possible.

In secular marriages, vows can be created by the couple or taken from a standard text and led by the registrar. You could even do a mixture of both, adapting the original script to suit you and your partner.

If you want to write your own vows, you can do this separately or as a couple. Some couples like to write theirs privately, so that their fiancé/e hears it for the very first time on their wedding day. Vows usually include the bride and groom’s promises to each other, and look back at their relationship so far, and ahead to their life ahead together. You can take inspiration from poems, songs, literature, films, time spent together, hobbies, special events and moments in your life and most of all – why you love your partner so much!

A good length for a vow is between 1 and 3 minutes – that is, if you can hold back the tears for that long!
