Dating back to Victorian times this good luck verse has had an endless amount of brides ensuring that they have all four of the somethings incorporated into their bridal wear in some way or another. The ‘Something Old’ relates to the bride’s family and is a symbol of continuity. Many brides choose to wear something of their mother’s or grandmothers, often a special piece of jewellery or even their wedding dress or veil. Other alternatives include a brooch, scarf, handkerchief or a piece of lace sewn into your own wedding gown.
‘Something New’ symbolises good luck and the beginning of a new chapter in the happy couples newly married life together. This is usually the wedding dress although can be any item that has been purchased new from the wedding shoes, headpiece, flowers or rings. In choosing to wear a new item on your wedding day it is a reflection on the new journey of married life your self and your husband are about to embark on.
Representing the ‘Something Borrowed’ is the brides family and friends. There for her on the wedding day and in the future to offer love, support and guidance. This item should be lent to the bride from a happily married woman from her circle of friends and family. In turn she is lending some of her own wedded bliss for the bride to take into her own marriage. You could wear an item of jewellery, tiara or veil that one of your closest friends wore on her own special day. Just remember to return it afterwards.
Lastly the ‘Something Blue’ in the saying is often worn as a piece of ribbon sewn into the inner part of the wedding dress or on the bridal garter. Many years ago it was the symbol of purity and faithfulness and both the bride and groom wore blue bands on the border of their bridal wear as a reflection of their love and fidelity. Alternatively you could wear blue wedding shoes or lingerie, have blue stones in your jewellery or wear blue nail polish. Be as creative as you so desire!

When gathering ideas and inspiration for your wedding day a great way to piece all your ideas and images together is to create a Wedding Mood and Inspiration board. It can be tricky initially getting your ideas together and knowing where exactly to begin, yet with a mood board you can see all your thoughts coming alive and can see clearly what compliments and what clashes. All the planning and preparation can be a little overwhelming and by making a board you will be assisting everyone involved in your wedding to ensure they are on the right route to achieving exactly what you want. Your mood board will not only help your suppliers but it will help your groom too and everyone else involved in the wedding know which direction you are coming from. If you have a groom that’s keen to be involved in the planning then get him to add his ideas too – just keep his beady eyes away from any wedding dresses you may have found – unless you want his opinion of course!
Take your mood board with you or print off your ideas when you set off shopping for your wedding dress. It will provide you with a good starting ground with the bridal wear sales assistant’s as they will be able to clearly see the type of look you are hoping to achieve. Many brides have their own wedding mood boards online so they can exchange ideas with each other.

Whether you’re nervous about being the centre of attention for the day, worried about where to seat squabbling family members or concerned that you’re not going to find your dream wedding dress, as a bride to be planning your wedding it is perfectly normal for you to fret over certain elements of your special day.
If going shopping for wedding dresses fills you with fear then don’t fret. Here are some pointers to assist you in your search to finding you own gown.
- Before you go trying on wedding dresses consider what your personal style is. Are you glam girlie or a true tomboy? Your gown should be a reflection on your individual personality.
- Do your research beforehand. Browse through bridal wear magazines and scour websites for images of wedding dresses that you like the look of. It is likely you will see similarities between the pictures. Take these shopping with you to give the sales assistants an idea of what you like the look of.
- Try to keep an open mind. Very often a bride will go for the complete opposite of a dress she first envisaged herself walking down the aisle in. Sales assistants have seen hundreds of brides and know what dresses look good on certain body shapes.
- If there is a part of your body that you like then look for a gown that accentuates it. A sweetheart gown will flatter your chest, whilst a shorter gown will show off your legs.
- Don’t feel you have to be traditional. Use your imagination and set your creative side free if you fancy something that little bit different.
- Your wedding theme may decipher your choice of wedding dress. If you’re getting wed in a castle and having a horse and carriage then you need a princess style gown.
- Ensure you look and feel the part before you set off trying on wedding dresses. Pop on some decent undies and wear some make up to make you feel good prior to your appointment.
- Don’t beleive the hype that you have to get butterflies in your tummy or burst into tears for it to be the right dress. Not every bride gets that feeling of ‘knowing’ when it is the one. If you have narrowed it down to a couple of dresses that you like then simply go back later on to retry the gowns to make your final decision with the help of a close friend or on your own after sleeping on it.
- Finally don’t lose sleep over the budget you have allocated for your bridal wear. At the Wedding Dress Factory Outlet all our discount wedding dresses are affordable to all with prices from £150-£400.
