On purchasing your wedding dress it is likely that it will require some form of alteration to achieve the perfect fit. What requires altering varies depending on the dress and the bride herself. It can be as simple as having the length adjusted to having the bridal gown restructured and designed.

A first fitting is generally done about two months before your wedding day. It is advisable not to have your fitting done too early as you could end up with a dress that does not fit, especially if your weight fluctuates. However, if you leave it too late there may not be enough time for the seamstress to carry out all the work that is needed. As bridal wear is unique it is important to use someone who is experienced in altering these types of garments.

Ideally you should have the lingerie and shoes that you are going to be wearing on your big day when you go along to your first fitting. If you are going to be wearing a hoop or underskirt underneath your dress then take this too. It is surprising how much these items can change the shape and look of you in your bridal gown. Underwear can take inches off (or add on if you prefer!) to your upper half and your shoes and hoop will lift up the overall length of the skirt. This will enable the seamstress to fit the dress as it should do on your big day and possibly prevent further fittings which would incur further costs to you. By taking along your other accessories you will be able to preview what it all looks like together, prior to your wedding day!

The price of your alterations varies, however once your seamstress sees you in your wedding gown and you have discussed what you would like doing she will give you an estimate of the cost. Most work is carried out on a per hour basis, therefore if you have a simple one layered skirt gown that requires shortening this would cost less than a skirt of several layers with lots of tulle.

Your final fitting is usually a week or two before your special day. This allows time should any further adjustments be needed. Don’t forget to take your shoes and lingerie to see the complete package! Once you are happy with the fit she’s all yours to take home. The next time you will be putting it on will be your wedding day!

No matter how amazing your figure is, most wedding dresses need a few alterations – don’t take it to heart! Wedding gowns aren’t designed to fit off-the-peg so set aside a small budget for a seamstress when you choose your dress.

Take your dress to be altered somewhere around 3 months before your wedding – you will probably go back for 2 or 3 fitting sessions to make sure it is a perfect fit no matter whether you lose or gain a little weight before the big day! Remember to bring your bridal lingerie and your shoes – body-shaping underwear can affect how the dress fits, and your seamstress will need to know how high your heels are so he or she can ensure the hem falls at the right height. You can also bring along your other accessories to give you a real idea of how you’ll look on the day.

Bring along a friend, bridesmaid or your mum to the fittings to get another opinion and to keep you company – another pair of hands is always useful to help you get in and out of your dress and work out the logistics, especially if you need to check how your train will be carried etc. Practice walking in your dress and your heels – for example, there’s a little trick to walking in a full skirt where you kick your skirt ahead of you before each step to avoid treading on your hem!

Avoid any alterations beyond simple fitting, such as adding extra elements or adjusting the style – you might regret it and it’s difficult to back when you’ve made a major change to such a specialist item of clothing. That’s not to say you can’t add in your own personal style, such as different buttons or details, or adding a removable train for example.

Always bear in mind that it’s better to buy a wedding dress that’s bigger rather than smaller – no matter how much weight you plan on losing – taking a gown in is easier than letting one out…

We send our brides to be to our recommended seamstress, and our staff are experienced in advising women what alterations can and can’t be done on each specific dress – so take advantage of our knowledge when you come to visit!

Wedding Dress Sizes & Alterations

Some useful information you will need to know about choosing the size of your dress and making arrangements for alterations;

Firstly, it is important to understand that at The Wedding Dress Factory Outlet, we work very differently to boutiques. Basically, what we have in stock is what we have, unlike bridal boutiques who will order a specific size that is nearest to you with delivery usually in around 16 weeks. The advantage of the way we work is that you know that wedding dress you try on is the dress you will have, although the downside is that we don’t hold all wedding dresses in all sizes. That’s where a good seamstress comes in…

Even if the dress you find with us does not fit perfectly straight away, there is still hope. A good seamstress will have no problem with sizing a dress up or down to fit you. Depending upon the fabric type and the seam allowance in the dress, it is possible to increase a bridal dress by 1 or 2 sizes, so if you are a size 14 and find a size 10 or 12 dress that you love, it could still be possible to have the dress altered to fit.

We can recommend a great seamstress who we have worked with for many years. She is not employed by us and therefore you would need to make your own arrangements to book in with her at a time to suit you both. Alternatively, you can choose to appoint your own seamstress, which may be easier if you are travelling some distance to purchase your wedding dress from us.

Some other useful tips:

The underwear you choose to have on the day can affect the fit of the dress, so make sure you wear the correct underwear when you have your final fitting.

Don’t have the length of the dress altered until you have chosen your shoes.

A large proportion of our wedding dresses have trains, but if you prefer not to have a train, remember that most competent seamstresses would be able to remove it.

Don’t have your final fitting too early on as your weight could fluctuate with the stress of organising the wedding!! Please make sure you have a time booked in with a seamstress early on as the good ones will get booked up quickly, particularly in the spring and summer months.

Please see our website http://weddingdress-factoryoutlet.co.uk and we look forward to helping you find your perfect dress.
